Upflow Air Intake grilles

New Upflow Style Intake Grille

We have recently developed a new style of mist eliminator designed to reduce the installation depth required behind the intake grille.

Traditional mist eliminators are installed with the vanes positioned vertically, allowing air to pass straight through the 100 mm deep eliminator before entering the air duct behind it. Because of this configuration, the ducting must be deep enough to accommodate the mist eliminator itself (plus any additional dorade height required for freeboard compliance). Further duct depth is then required to allow the airflow to change direction and continue into the engine room.

The result is a relatively deep intake assembly, which can present challenges where space is limited.

Low-Profile Mist Eliminator Design

This newly developed style of mist eliminator is designed to significantly reduce the installation depth required behind the engine room intake grille.

Traditional mist eliminators are installed with the vanes positioned vertically, allowing air to pass straight through before entering the air duct behind it. Because of this arrangement, the ducting must be deep enough to accommodate the mist eliminator itself (plus any additional dorade height required for freeboard compliance). Additional depth is then required for the airflow to change direction and continue into the engine room.

The result is a relatively deep intake assembly, which can be difficult to accommodate on vessels where available space is limited.

Our new Upflow Grille design reconfigures the airflow path, allowing the mist eliminator to be integrated into a much shallower assembly without compromising ventilation performance or water separation.

Rather than directing airflow straight through the mist eliminator, our new design uses an angled air diverter to guide incoming air upwards into the engine room ventilation duct. This innovative configuration reduces the required installation depth to just 150 mm above and behind the grille, making it ideal for applications where space is limited.

By reducing the overall installation depth, designers and boat builders gain greater flexibility when incorporating engine room ventilation into confined spaces.

To maintain the required airflow capacity within the shallower profile, the intake assembly has a wider footprint than a conventional design. This trade-off provides designers and boat builders with greater flexibility, particularly on modern vessels where installation depth is often a more significant constraint than available width.

  • Custom manufactured product still based around the amount of air you need.
  • Quoted to suit your horsepower, operating conditions and requirements.
  • Installation depth of just 150mm required above and behind the grille.
  • Looks much better aesthetically installed deck side on a vessel.
  • Ideal for boat owners who have limited depth but access to a greater length for their intake grilles

Standard Inclusions

We start our Upflow Intake System with a base design of the intake grille and duct and then you can add fans and fan controllers from there.

Please keep in mind, fans may have to be ducted to suit limited dept situations.
