Fire Flaps to Protect Your Engine Room
Air Dampers are a necessary requirement for the engine room of any commercial in-survey vessel, and are also a good idea on non survey craft.
Typically Air Dampers are either triggered automatically or manually, and effectively close the air supply to the engine room to allow fire suppression equipment to work. We can manufacture and supply Air Dampers (Fire Flaps) either in conjunction with our Air Intake Grilles, our High Volume Fans or supplied as a stand alone product.
They can be mounted immediately rear of the grilles, within the duct work itself, on the bulkhead or deck head penetration, or any penetration that serves air into or out of the engine room.
Our Air Dampers can also be supplied with a control cable that runs from the damper to an external location outside of the engine room space. This manual control is easily operated by disengaging the pull ring from the keeper bracket. This action trips the spring-loaded damper louvre which closes off the air supply to your engine room. This is also a semi auto control. If there is fire or intense heat in the vicinity of the control cable (which is a synthetic material), the cable will melt and trigger the flap automatically. This manual activation kit is available for $250 + gst.
For a fully automatic system, we can supply the dampers with a 24V DC actuator. This actuator works via a temperature probe mounted in the air stream, and once the probe reaches 72°C it will shut the damper automatically. The actuator will also trip if the power supply to the system is turned off. These automatic controllers are a great option for a set and forget situation ensuring full peace of mind. If you use an Air Damper system, you will need to test and prove the system annually for a surveyor. To reset after this test simply re-pull the cable and re-engage the ring into the keeper bracket. It's very easy.
If your vessel is in survey and you need to meet a certification level, we can also supply A-60 class certified air dampers

These Belimo Actuators are available as an option for our Stainless Steel Air Dampers.
- Automated fail safe DC actuator for SS Dampers
- Require positive and negative connection to power up
- Will trigger with any interruption of power as a fail safe.
- They also have an inbuilt thermal trigger that will activate when engine room temp exceeds its trigger point
- There are 2 pre-set trigger point options:
- 1 is 72 degrees Celsius and is the standard option.
- 2nd is 95 degrees Celsius and is typically used if the actuator is located near an exhaust or external heat source.
- They can be fitted to most damper sizes. Please ask if unsure.
- Available as a stand alone product or pre fitted to dampers prior to dispatch.

- the engine room volume
- whether you have AC or DC power and whether your system is 12 or 24 volt.

If this is a new build a GA would be ideal.
We also need to know what extra equipment might be in your engine room and the horsepower of that equipment. IE A genset that is 45hp for example.
