Assembly Workers

Full Time or Job Share

This role will report directly to the Production Manager.

Please Be Aware: This role will be on a casual basis for the first 3 months of employment.

About The Role

The role will entail assembling aluminium marine products from parts. The products can be up to 1400mm long x 400mm wide and 100mm high so they are larger items. Aluminium is not a heavy material but as per the sizes above they can be bulky to handle. You will not be expected to handle anything larger than you are comfortable with, however we do offer mobile trolleys and benches, have a forklift and other workers to assist you if and when you require.

While this role is primarily for the assembly of these specific products, there will be on occasion other work that you may be asked to do. This could be (and not limited to):

  • detailing/finishing other metal products with grinders and finishing tools
  • assisting tradespeople as needed
  • operation of automated aluminium cutting saw
  • assisting with packaging of customer order
  • general warehouse duties.

While we invision that this will become a full time role, we do not guarantee that you will automatically progress to a full time employee after your 3 month probation is completed. While that should give you enough time to be confident in the role, ultimately full time employment is not a guaranteed progression. We would love to see that it is, however if you do need further training, the probation period may be extended.

Skills You Will Need:

We are happy to fully train team members for this role, however there are some characteristics you MUST posess to be a contributing member of our amazing team.

You must be

  • punctual and reliable
  • have a high degree of pride in your work
  • the confidence to stop and ask for help as required
  • have a strong mechanical aptitude
  • have the ability to become confident in handling power tools once trained
  • be willing to work unsupervised once your training has finished
  • be willing to take direction, listen and respond if you do not understand your task
  • hold a current drivers licence
  • be prepared to be doing repetitive work every day

About Job Sharing

While we are open to 2 people job sharing this role, you must come to us as part of a team. We are ideally looking for someone to work a full week starting on a casul basis. We do envisage the position becoming full time after your probationary and training period. We would be happy to have the role covered in a job sharing situation IF you are both committed to working your shifts AND filling in for your partner if they are unwell or on vacation.

Sorry, we are not in a position to offer school based  hours.

Hours Of Work

We operate on a 4 day week.

The factory starts work at 6am and finished at 4:30 pm Monday to Thursday. As a rule we do not work Fridays. There are the odd Fridays we may work if we need to catch up on our schedule, however it isn't more than a few per year.

Typically Monday is a work day even on slated public holidays unless we advise differently. There are occasions where the team vote to work the Friday in order to have a public holiday Monday off but this is a team decision and for safety reasons, if the team decides to work the Monday, that is a group decision and all team members will be required to work. We understand there is the odd occasion where you may have something planned but reasonable notice is required in that situation. We advise all new team members to expect to work every Monday, and if as a team you decide to change that, all well and good.

Factory Closure

We close the factory for 3 weeks over the Christmas New Year period every year. Typically we work up until the last Friday before Christmas however on years where that is odd timing we may finish up a week early. Regardless we do have that time off every year and the factory is closed completely.

Rates Of Pay - Casual

The Fiar Work Ombudsman rates of pay for this award are listed below. We have listed the casual award to start. You will be required to complete 3 months training and/or probation. If we are both happy at this point we would choose to move forward to full time employment.

C13 - Engineering/manufacturing employee - level II - 17 Years of age Casual $15.11 per hour

C13 - Engineering/manufacturing employee - level II - 18 Years of age Casual $17.86 per hour

C13 - Engineering/manufacturing employee - level II - 19 Years of age Casual $21.58 per hour

C13 - Engineering/manufacturing employee - level II - 20 Years of age Casual $25.55 per hour

C13 - Engineering/manufacturing employee - level II - 21 Years of age and above Casual $26.15 per hour

Rates Of Pay - Full Time

If we do offer you a full time role, we do run on a flat hourly rate for our full time staff as an employee agreement. This rate is calculated to include

  • public holidays
  • sick leave &
  • vacation time

This rate works out at higher than the award would be, however it also means that you are responsible for your own holiday pay & sick leave, and public holidays are treated as standard work days. We do offer the chance to accrue hours every week to ensure you are paid over the factory closure period, but that isn't required. As a guide, this rate usually ends up a little more than the casual rate broken down above.

This agreement, all the calculations behind it will be explained in full prior to you commencing any full time employment.

Who Should Apply?

We love diversity in our team so people from all walks of life are encouraged to apply.

Non Australians?

If you have a current Australian work permit that has no time or hourly restrictions please feel free to apply. We don't make a practice of sponsoring overseas applicants so you must already have a work permit in place. We will also need to sight that prior to the offer of any employment.

No Experience?

Have no experience? If you can explain to us why you would be great for the role, feel free to apply, however you MUST tell us why you could do the role well (as in what personal skills you have that translate to this job).

That's fine. We have 3 team members currently for who English is their second language. You will need basic english to understand directions and safety briefings.

Behind Marine Air Flow

The evolution of MAFI

Marine Air Flow's owners have been involved in the marine industry for over 30 years.

Initially involved in the boat building industry in Western Australia, Brad Marsden (our Director) moved to Queensland in 1994. Based in Cairns he then took on the role of workshop manager for a local company that built semi submersibles for international export, and aluminium vessels for the tourism industry.

After 2½ years with this company, Brad was invited to project manage a large architectural glazing project in Singapore. This gave him the chance to combine two of his favoured mediums, glass and stainless steel. Upon completion of this project, Brad returned to Cairns and with his wife Jenny, started a local business that was responsible for specialist refit services for the marine industry. While it was a very successful business, any refit or repair business can be very stressful and often involves 6 or 7 days a week routinely.

After selling that business in 2004, at Jenny's insistance, Brad went fishing for a year. Literally! Every Monday night Brad and his mate Rod would head down to Kuramine Beach (south of Cairns) for 2½ days of fishing and golf. It was during this time that Brad started to think about what he might do next.

Always knowing he would stay in the marine industry, Brad wanted his focus to be a business style that avoided the time constraints and stress that doing marine refits gives you. Having had to develop their own ventilation equipment for refit clients  through 1990-2004 gave Brad a unique insight into what could be an emerging marine market. After a decent amount of research it became clear that there was a market for Australian made, affordable, long lasting engine room grilles, air dampers (fire flaps) and fans, and Marine Air Flow was born.
